periodontal tissues anatomy Flashcards
1
Q
what is the periodontium’s purpose?
A
to support the tooth
2
Q
what is the periodontium made up of?
A
- pdl
- bone
- gingivae
- cementum
3
Q
name each part
A
4
Q
what kind of product is the PDL?
A
dense fibrous connective tissue
5
Q
what are PDL fibres primarily composed of?
A
collagen
6
Q
what is the purpose of PDL fibres (3 things)?
A
-attach tooth to bone
-shock absorber
-sensory (highly innervated)
7
Q
name each part
A
8
Q
name each part
A
9
Q
why do we use infiltrations for upper teeth but use them less for lower teeth?
A
- cortical bone of lower jaw thicker at molars/premolars and apices lie centrally in the jaw-requires IDB
- cortical bone thinner for anteriors and apices lie buccal side so infiltration would work.
10
Q
what two tissues make up the oral mucosa?
A
- epithelium
- connective tissue
11
Q
what are the 3 types of oral mucosa?
A
- masticatory
- lining
- specialised
12
Q
describe the mucosa distribution intra-orally
A
13
Q
describe gingival mucosa
A
- masticatory
- relatively thick epithelium
- keratinised
- pink
- stippled
- firm
14
Q
describe alveolar mucosa
A
- lining
- relatively thin epithelium
- non-keratinised
- red
- loose/mobile
- smooth
15
