Periodontal/soft tissue regeneration Flashcards
What are the goals of periodontal therapy?
- Infection control
- Pocket reduction/elimination
- Regeneration
- Long-term results
- Improvement of esthetics
Why is it a challenge to have perio/soft tissue regeneration?
- Open system
- Connection oral cavity via sulcus
- Healing on surface with poor blood supply
- Regenerate- bone and perio ligament, cementum
- Regenerate cementum and perio ligament attached to cementum
When considering the colonization of the root surface, name the cells in order of speed at which this occurs
Fastest cells are epithelial cells ➡️ gingival CTC ➡️ PDL cells ➡️ bone cells
Name a disadvantage of using non-resorbable membranes
They require 2 surgeries
Why do we have a barrier in GTR?
Guided tissue regeneration
- Barrier prevents epithelium
- Allows time and space for bone and PDL to grow back into space
- 6 months for healing: bone and PDL ect
- Bone graph needed to fill space to prevent barrier collapsing
- Bone graphs to ensure space is maintained
Name some prognostic affecting factors in regeneration
OHI
Smoking
Kind of defect
Radiographic defect angle- how wide is the angle?
- Wider the defect- less regeneration
Endodontic condition
Mobility- stabilize before regeneration
