PERIODICITY (period 3) Flashcards
1
Q
What happens to atomic radius down the period
Explain why this occurs
A
Atomic radius decreases across the period due to increasing effective nuclear charge. The number of protons increase across the period while shielding effect remains approximately constant since none of them have additional shells.

Q
What happens to ionic radius down the period, for both cationic and anionic. Explain why this occurs
How do the cationic radii compare to that of anions in the same period.
A
Both cationic (Na+ to Al3+) and anionic (P3- to Cl-) radii decrease down the period.
