periodicity Flashcards
Group 2 compound + water?
= Metal hydroxide and hydrogen (gets quicker down the group)
Metal hydroxide solubility?
Mg(OH)2 is the least soluble, Ba(OH)2 is the most
Metal Sulfate solubility?
BaSO4 is insoluble, MgSO4 is most soluble
Test for SO4 ions?
add HCL and BaCl2 to solution
- If SO4 present = white ppt (BASO4)
F2, Cl2, Br2, I2?
F2 = pale yellow gas Cl2 = Green gas Br2 = Red brown liquid I2 = Grey solid
Uses Of BaSO4
Barium meal (opaque on Xrays)
Use of CaO/ CaCO3
Scrubbing
Eg CaO + water + SO2 –> CaSO3 + water
Uses of Ca(OH)2
Neutralises acidic soil
Uses of Mg(OH)2
Anacid (neutralises stomach acid)
Use of Chlorine?
NaOH + Cl2 –> NaClO + NaCl
Bleach
Use of chlorine? - disproportionation
1) Cl2 + water –> 2H+ + Cl- + ClO- (these ions kill bacteria, so used in water treatment)
2) Cl2 + water –> 2H+ +2Cl- + 0.5 O2 (sunlight)
Halide ion precipitates
AgCl = White ppt (dissolves in dilute Ammonia) AgBr = Cream ppt (dissolves in c. ammonia) AgI = yellow ppt (insoluble)
Why is nitric acid added before halide ion identification?
To remove carbonate ions
Use of magnesium solid?
1) Mg + TiO2 –> TiCl4 (carbon solid, Cl2, heat)
2) fractional distillation of TiCl4
3) TiCl4 + 2Mg –> Ti + 2MgCl
Halides = H2SO4?
Eg NaX + H2SO4 –> NaHSO4 + HX
