Periodicity Flashcards
What are the features of group 2 elements?
Silver metals (form an oxide layer)
Form white compounds
Higher melting points than group 1
Harder and denser than group 1
What are the name of group 2 elements?
Alkaline earth metals
What are the name of group 7 elements?
Halogens
What are the physical properties of group 7 elements?
Low melting and boiling points
Exist as diatomic molecules
Boiling points increase as you go down the group
Why do the boiling points of the halogens increase as you go down the group?
As you go down the group, the number of electrons increases, increasing induced dipole-dipole forces between molecules.
What is the appearance of fluorine?
Colourless gas
What is the appearance of chlorine?
Pale green gas
What is the appearance of bromine?
Orange solution
What is the appearance of iodine?
Purple-black solid
Why are halogens more soluble in cyclohexane than in water?
Halogens are more soluble in cyclohexane because they are both non-polar and like dissolves like. Whereas water is a polar molecule.
