Periodic TRENDS SO TRENDY TIDEPOD CHALLONGE Flashcards
Yess lemme eat dem tidepods ;-;
What is atomic radius?
The distance from the nucleus to the outside of the atom
What is Zeff (effective nuclear charge)?
The net force of attraction between an electron and the nucleus
What is Zeff affected by?
Number of protons and inner electron shielding
What is atomic radius affected by?
The amount of shells (n) (increases) and the Zeff (decreases atomic radius as electrons more pulled towards nucleus)
What directions does atomic radius increase?
Down (more shells, larger) and Left (decreasing Zeff, less pull)
What is ionization energy?
The energy required to remove an electron from an atom in the gaseous state
What directions does ionization energy increase?
Up (decreased radius meaning it’s easier to displace electrons) and Right (same reason)
What is electron affinity?
The change in energy that accompanies the addition of an electron to an atom in the gaseous state
What directions does electron affinity increase?
Up (added electron closer to the nucleus) and Right (Zeff increases)
What is Metallic Character/Reactivity of Metals
Literally what the name says
What directions does Metallic Character/Reactivity of Metals increase?
Down (furthest electrons are further away and escape easier) and Left (Zeff decreases meaning electrons escape easier)
What is electronegativity?
An indicator of the ability of an atom to attract shared electrons
What directions does electronegativity increase?
Up (atomic radius decreases meaning the nucleus has a stronger pull on the furthest electrons) and Right (same reason)
