Periodic Trends Flashcards
Atomic mass
Some of protons+neutrons
Atomic radius
The distance from the center of the atom to the outermost electrons. Atomic radius indicates the size of the atom
Ionization energy
The minimum amount of energy needed to remove the outermost electron from an isolated atom of a gaseous sample of an element
Electron affinity
The amount of energy released when an electron is added to an atom
Electronegativity
Tendency of an atom to attract electrons
What group of elements has the lowest electron affinity? Why?
Metals. Because metals lose electrons to become balanced rather than gain
What is the difference between the 1st ionization energy of an element and the 3rd
In the 3rd ionization energy; atoms are getting larger and electrons are further away from the nucleus. Also the outer electron becomes increasingly more shielded from the nucleus by inner electrons
What happens when you add an electron to potassium
Potassium is a metal and a cation, meaning protons outnumber electrons and there’s less shielding of electrons
What happens when you remove an electron from chlorine
Chlorine is a nonmetal and an anion, meaning electrons outnumber protons and there’s greater electron to electron repulsion
