Periodic Trends Flashcards
What is electronegativity?
Ability of an atom to attract electrons from another element
What is electrostatic attraction?
More proton that create a higher positive charge resulting in a higher nuclear pull
What is the most electronegative element?
Fluorine
What is metallic character?
Measure of an atom to lose an electron to form a cation
What is Atomic Radius?
Distance from the centre of the atom to the edge of the electron cloud
What is the atomic radius trend?
- Increases down a group because of additional electron shell
- Decreases across a period because of electrostatic attraction
What is the ionic radius trend?
- Increases down a group because of additional electron shell
- Increases across a period metals lose and non-metals gain
What is ionisation energy trend?
- Decreases down a group because of electron shielding
- Increases across a period because of electrostatic attraction
What is electronegativity trend?
-Decreases down a group because of electron shielding
- Increases across a period due to electrostatic attraction
What is the valency trend?
- Stays the same when moving down a group
- increases across a period
What is metallic character trend?
Increases down a group and decreases across a period
