Periodic Table Quiz Prep Flashcards
How do you calculate an atoms mass?
Protons+neutrons=mass
What is the atomic number equal to?
of protons, # of electrons (when atoms are neutrally charged)
Where are protons located?
Nucleus
Where are Neutrons located?
Nucleus
Where are electrons located?
electron cloud
what charge do protons have?
positive
what charge do electrons have?
negative
what charge do neutrons have
neutral
how do you calculate the number of neutrons in an atom?
n=#m-#p
how is atomic notation formatted?
Mass
Symbol
Atomic #
what are isotopes?
two or more forms of an element with the same #of protons/atomic number
what do isotopes of the same element NOT have in common?
mass and number of neutrons
what does the number next to an isotope indicate? Ex: Chromium-58
mass
how do you tell isotopes apart?
number of neutrons and isotope number
how do you calculate AVERAGE atomic mass?
(4 steps)
- find the percentage abundance of each isotope (number of particles/total number of particles then times 100),
- find the average mass for each isotope (isotopes total mass/number of particles of that isotope)
- Multiply the percentage abundance (in decimal form) by the average mass of each isotope
- Add all isotopes together
What are the 7 sections on the periodic table?
- Alkaline Metals
- Alkaline Earth Metals
- Transition Metals

How does the modern periodic table organize elements?
atomic number and atomic mass
what is the periodic law?
when elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number, there is a periodic repetition of their physical and chemical properties
what are rows called?
Periods
what are columns called?
groups or families
