Periodic Table Part 4 Flashcards
What does the law of conservation of mass state?
The mass of the products must equal the mass of the reactants, and mass can neither be created or removed
What is an element?
A pure substance made up of atoms with the same atomic number
What is a compound?
A pure substance made up of different types of atoms chemically combined in a fixed ratio
What is a mixture?
Two or more substances that are physically combined
What is an alpha particle?
A positively charged particle formed from ionising radiation
What is the trend in metallic character in the periodic table?
It decreases across a period and increases down a group
How is core charge calculated?
Atomic number - Inner Shell Electrons
What is the core charge of Group 1, 2, 13-17 elements?
Group 1 = +1 Group 2= +2 Group 13 = +3 Group 14 = +4 Group 15 = +5 Group 16 = +6 Group 17 = +7`
What is the core charge of group 18 elements?
Noble gases are stable and do not have a core charge
What is the size of an atom also known as?
Atomic radius
What is the trend in atomic radius in the periodic table?
It decreases across a period and increases down a group
What is the trend in core charge in the periodic table?
It increases across a period
What is the trend in ionisation energy in the periodic table?
It increases across a period and decreases down a group
Why do noble gases have the highest ionisation energy?
They are stable and electrons do not want to be lost, therefore it is difficult to ionise them
Which elements are the most electronegative?
Halogens
