Periodic table and Chemical reactions Flashcards
What are elements in group 7 of periodic table called?
Halogens
What are elements in group 8 of periodic table called?
Nobel Gases
What are elements in group 1 of periodic table called?
Alkali Metals
The metals between groups 2 and 3 are called the
Transition metals
What is the advantage of using symbols for the elements rather than their names?
So all the discussions about the chemicals are the same whatever the language spoken by the chemist
What are the properties of metals?
Conductor of electricity, Good conductor of heat, Shiny appearance(metallic lustre), Malleable (can be beaten into sheets), Ductile (can be drawn into wires)
What are the properties of non-metals?
Non - conductor of electricity, Poor conductor of heat, Dull appearance, Brittle
the columns going down the periodic table are called
groups
the rows going across the periodic table are called
periods
What is a compound?
A chemical compound is any substance composed of two or more chemical elements chemically bonded together.
What is a mixture?
Two or more elements or compounds mixed together which can be easily separated.
Why does a compound weigh more than an element?
The mass of a compound is the sum of the masses of all the atoms it contains. Since compounds consist of multiple types of atoms, their combined atomic masses are greater than the atomic mass of an individual element.
what is an element?
Is a substance made of only one type of atom
What is always at the centre of a word equation?
an arrow (not = sign)
