πΌ Periodic Table Additional Notes πΌ Flashcards
what are the horizontal rows called?
periods
how are the horizontal rows organised?
the elements are arranged in an order of increasing atomic number. The physical and chemical properties of each of the elements in a row are different.
what are the vertical rows called?
groups or families
how are the columns organised?
there are 18 main columns numbered 1-18
classify the elements in column 1
The Alkali Metals - all soft, silver-white shiny metals that are highly reactive
classify the elements in column 2
The Alkaline Earth Metals - very abundant in the earthβs crust
classify the elements in column 17
The Halogens - all gases, or easily become gases
classify the elements in column 18
The Noble Gases - all inactive gases that so not react or join with other elements
properties of a metal
- good conductors of heat and electricity
- ductile (can be drawn into thin wires)
- malleable (can be hammered into sheets)
properties of a non-metal
- poor conductors of heat and electricity
- have dull surfaces
- have low melting points
- non-metals that are solids are brittle and break easily
properties of a metalloid
- shiny or dull
- conduct heat and electricity better than non-metals but not as well as metals
