What is an ion?
An electrically charged particle
What is a positively charged ion called?
Cation
What is a negatively charged ion called?
Anion
What is an isotope?
Are versions of an element that have the same number of protons but a different amount of neutrons (atomic mass will be changed)
What does the mass number consist of?
The protons + neutrons = mass number
What is a metalloid? (or semi-metal)
Is an element that has both metallic and non-metallic properties
What are monatomic ions?
Are ions that contains only one atom
What are polyatomic ions?
Are ions that contain more than one atom
How can you tell if a compound is ionic?
If it has a metal and a non-metal element
How can you tell if a compound is covalent ( also called molecular )
If it has only non-metal elements
If you are given the natural abundance, how do you convert it to fractional abundance?
Divide the natural abundance by 100
How do you find the atomic weight?
Isotopic mass x Fractional Abundance
What is the unit for atomic weight?
amu (atomic mass unti)
List the properties of ionic compounds.
- High boiling points
- High melting points
- Solids at room temp.
- Conduct electricity ( in molten states)
- Soluble in water
List the properties of molecular (covalent) compounds.
- Low boiling points
- Low melting points
- Gases/liquids at room temp.
- Do no conduct electricity
- Insoluble in water, but are soluble in organic solvents
What are hydrates?
Are compounds that contain water molecules that are weakly bound to the crystals
Name an example of hydrate.
CaCl2.7H20 written as calcium chloride heptahydrate
What does a triangle symbol mean in relation to chemical equations?
That the reaction had heat involved
What does aq mean in relation to chemical equations?
Aqueous, meaning that the substance in dissolved in water
