Periodic Table Flashcards
How are elements arranged on the Periodic Table?
In increasing order of the atomic number.
What determines the atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus of the atom in an element.
What determines the atomic mass?
The number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of the atom in an element.
What determines the column or group the element is located in on the Periodic Table?
The number of valence electrons of the atom in an element because all the elements in a group have the same number of valence electrons.
What determines the row or period that the element is located in on the Periodic Table?
The number of valence electrons of the atoms in an element.
RULE:When moving left to right of a row the number of valence electrons increases. When moving down the rows of the Periodic Table, the number of electron shells of the atom in each element increase.
