Periodic Table Flashcards
What are elements in the same vertical column of the periodic table called?
Elements in the same vertical column are in the same group.
Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell, and therefore similar properties.
What are elements in the same horizontal row of the periodic table called?
Elements in the same horizontal row are in the same period.
The atomic number increases by one moving across the period.
What are metals in the periodic table?
Elements that react to form positive ions (except Hydrogen).
Metals are located on the left and center of the periodic table.
What are non-metals in the periodic table?
Elements that react to form negative ions.
Non-metals are located on the right of the periodic table.
Who was able to create a relatively accurate periodic table?
Mendeleev was able to make a relatively accurate periodic table by leaving gaps for undiscovered elements and rearranging some elements.
Mendeleev could only measure relative atomic mass, not atomic number.
How are elements arranged in the modern periodic table?
Elements in the modern periodic table are arranged by atomic (proton) number.
