periodic table Flashcards
how are the elements in the periodic table arranged?
in order of increasing atomic number
how are elements with similar properties placed in the periodic table?
in vertical columns - same number of electrons in outer shell
how do you use the periodic table to predict the reactivity of elements?
metals - reactivity increases down the group
non metals - reactivity increases up the group
creation and attributes of mendeleev’s periodic table
arranged elements in order of increasing relative atomic mass
how are metals and non metals located on the periodic table?
metals are good conductors and located in the left, non metals are poor conductors and found on the right
what are noble gases?
colourless, odorless, tasteless and nonflammable under standard conditions
why do noble gases not react?
they have a full outer shell
what are the properties and reactivity of group 1 alkali metals?
they are soft, highly reactive with relatively low melting and boiling points
what are the properties of group 7?
the further down the group an element is, the higher its melting point
what are the properties of transition metals?
-good conductors of heat and electricity
-can be hammered or bent into shape easily
-have high melting points
-hard and tough
-high densities
