Periodic Table Flashcards
What are the physical properties of Group 1 metals
soft, low melting points, and low density
What are the chemical properties of Group 1 metals
- Reacts with water to form metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas
- Reacts with non-metal to form an ionic compound.
- Powerful reducing agents
What is the trend going down group 1
- Reactivity increases as atomic size increases, increasing the distance between valence electron and
the attractive force of nucleus. Hence valence electron is easily lost to form a cation. - Melting points decreases as ionic size increases, increasing the distance between delocalised electrons and the attractive force of nucleus, decreasing the strength of the electrostatic forces of attraction, less energy needed to overcome. Hence melting point decreases down the group.
What are the physical properties of group 17 elements
low boiling points, coloured and exists as diatomic molecules.
What is the colour of F2
pale yellow
what is the colour of Cl2
Greenish yellow
What is the colour of Br2
Reddish-brown
What is the colour of I2
Black(S), Purple(G), Brown(Aq)
What is the colour of At2
black
what are the chemical properties of group 17 elements
- Reacts with non-metal to form a covalent compound.
- Reacts with metal to form an ionic compound.
- Powerful oxidizing agents
- Displaces a less reactive halide ion from its aqueous solution.
What is the trend going down group 17
- Reactivity decreases as atomic size increases, increasing the distance between valence shell and the attractive force of nucleus. Hence atom will be harder to gain one valence electron to form an
anion. - Melting points increases as size of molecule increases, strength of intermolecular forces of attraction increases, more energy needed to overcome. Hence melting point increases down the group.
- Colour darkens.
What is the properties of group 18 elements
Monatomic, Low boiling points, Colourless gases at r.t.p., Insoluble in water, Inert/unreactive due to full valence shell/stable electronic configuration.
what are the properties of transition metals
- Can have variable oxidation states
- Often forms coloured compounds
- Some can act as catalysts to speed up certain reactions
- High melting points
- High density
What happens when group 1 metals react with water?
- Vigorous effervescence (H2 gas is flammable and may cause explosions.)
- Li/Na/K floats/darts on surface of water.
- Exothermic reaction, releases a lot of heat
- Product is a strong alkali (turns UI violet).
