Periodic Table: Flashcards
Periods and Groups:
- Periods run horizontally, and groups run vertically on the periodic table.
Alkali Metals:
Group 1 elements, highly reactive.
Noble Gases:
Group 8 elements, inert and stable.
Ionization Energy:
The energy required to remove an electron from an atom.
Atomic Radius:
The size of an atom, measured from the nucleus to the outermost electron.
Electronegativity:
An atom’s ability to attract and hold electrons
Valence Electrons:
Electrons in the outermost shell of an atom, involved in bonding.
Metalloids:
Elements with properties between metals and nonmetals.
Halogens:
Group 7 elements, highly reactive nonmetals.
Atomic Mass:
The mass of an atom, measured in atomic mass units (amu).
Isotopes:
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.
Metal Characteristics:
Conductors of heat and electricity, usually solid at room temperature.
Nonmetal Characteristics:
Poor conductors, often gases or brittle solids.
Metalloid Characteristics:
Properties between metals and nonmetals.
