Periodic Table Flashcards
Where are the reactive non-metals located on the periodic table?
Group 17
Where are the alkali metals located on the periodic table?
Group 1
Where are the Alkaline Earth Metals located on the periodic table?
Group 2
Where are the transition metals located on the periodic table?
Most metals except for groups 1, 2, 17, and 18, and a few exceptions
Where are the metalloids located on the periodic table?
The metalloids press right up against the zig-zag line of non-metals.
Where are the noble gases located on the periodic table?
Group 18
Where are the actinoids located on the periodic table?
They are the very bottom period, the one that’s separated
Where are the lanthanide located on the periodic table?
They are right above the actinoids, the second to last period that’s separated.
Identify the properties of metals.
Good conductors, solid, shiny
Identify the properties of alkaline metals.
soft, shiny, good conductors
Identify the properties noble gases
low reactivity
Describe the difference between ductile and malleable
Ductile is structured, while malleable is compressed
Describe atomic radius
Half the distance between two nuclei of the same atom that bonds together
Describe ionization energy and explain why some elements are more susceptible to losing or gaining electrons.
When atoms gain or lose electrons; When an atom has eight valance electrons, it becomes happy. When it’s missing one, or it has an extra one, it’s itching to make it to just eight valance electrons.
Identify a metalloid that from a negative three ion.
As or Sb
Identify the properties of nonmetals
poor conductors
Identify the properties of metalloids
properties will vary
Identify the properties of alkaline earth metals
reactive, hard and dense
Identify the properties of actinides
shiny, metallic, radioactive
Identify the properties of Lanthanides
shiny, metallic
Identify where on the periodic table you would find the most reactive nonmetals
Group 17
Be able to list in order from smallest to largest atomic radius
Decreases as you go across, and increases as you go down.
Identify the elements that are the most chemically reacitve
Halogens and alkali metals
Identify where on the periodic table you would find the lowest ionization energies
top right
What is an effective nuclear charge?
The amount of positive charge experienced by an electron
