periodic table Flashcards
group 1, 1 valence electrons, +1 common charge, most reactive of the metals, good conductors of electricity and are soft and shiny.
Alkali Metals
group 2, 2 valence electrons, +2 common charge, similar to alkali metals but are harder and have higher melting points. Slightly less reactive than group 1. Tend to be found in compounds.
Alkaline Earth Metals
group 17, 7 valence electrons, -1 common charge, most reactive non-metal, forms salt when reacting with metals, Diatomic gasses: F, Cl. Liquid: Br. Solids: I, At
Halogens
group 18, 8 valence electrons (helium has 2), 0 common charge, low reactivity and are monatomic gasses. Gasses include all of the furthest right elements besides bottom three (Uuo, Lu, Lr).
Noble Gasses
groups 3-12, do not have identical outer electron configurations, so charges are not predictable. Generally less reactive than alkali and alkaline4earth metals. Good conductors of heat and electricity.
Transition Metals
exhibit properties of both metals and nonmetals, are solids, are not lustrous, conduct heat and electricity moderately well.
Mellatoids
The two elements that are liquids at room temperature are
Bromine (Br) and Mercury (Hg).
The eleven elements that are gaseous at room temperature are
Hydrogen, Helium, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Flourine, Chlorine, Neon, Argon, Krypton, Xenon and Radon.
Diatomic Gasses are
hydrogen, Nitrogen, Fluorine, Oxygen, Iodine, Chlorine and Bromine.
