American system
Set of proposals designed to unify The nation and strengthen its economy by means of protective tariffs, a national Bank, and internal improvements such as canals and new roads
Republican motherhood/cult of domesticity
The idealization of women in their roles as wives and mothers. The concept of republican motherhood suggested that women would be responsible for raising your children to be virtuous citizens of the new AmericanRepublic.
Transcendentalism
Philosophical and literary movement of the 1800s that emphasized living a simple life and celebrating the truth found in nature and in personal emotion and in imagination
Utopian communities
A number of small self-sufficient communities developed in the 19 century attempt to achieve perfection
The second great awakening
A wave of religious enthusiasm that spread across America between 1800 and 1830. It made Americans aware of the moral issues of slavery
Jacksonian democracy
Associated with Andrew Jackson. Jacksonian democracy included respect for the abilities and aspirations of the common man, expansion white male suffrage, appointment of political supporters to government positions, and opposition to privileged eastern elites
Nullification
A legal theory that the state in the United States has the right to nullify or invalidate any federal law that the state deems unconstitutional. First introduced by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in the Virginia and Kentucky resolutions in 1798
Judicial review
The Supreme Court can strike down an act of congress by declaring it unconstitutional. Marbury vs. Madison
