Perio Maintenance Flashcards
What are the 4 stages of treatment sequence?
- Systemic
- Initial
- Corrective
- Maintenance
Describe what occurs during systemic phase
Eliminate or decrease influence of systemic conditions
Decrease/mitigate risk of infectious hazards to dentist/patient.
Describe what occurs during the initial phase
Cause related therapy to decrease periodontal pathogens
Debridement
correct restorative defects
adjunct antimicrobial agents
exo hopeless teeth
describe what occurs in corrective phase
treatment of sequelae of disease once under control
functional and aesthetic needs of patient addressed in stable periodontium
Maintenance phase aim
prevent re-infection and disease recurrence
What is root planing and why is it outdated
Root planing involves intentionaly removal of cementum to achieve a smooth rooth surface
Outdated because complete elimination of periodontal pathogens isn’t necessary, just minimise critical mass.
Benefits of maintenance phase
prevent recurrence/progression
prevent or decrease tooth loss
allow for early detection and treatment
How does an individualised maintenance phase reflect on tooth loss rates?
Treated but not maintained results in 2x tooth loss
Recall periods for High, Moderate and Low risks
High = 2-3 months
moderate = 6 months
low = 12 months
How often should radiographs be taken according to risk status?
High = 1-2 years
moderate = 3-4 years
low = 5-6 years
What are the 6 parameters for risk assessment in the Lang and Tonetti risk assessment?
BOP, PD, Tooth loss, BL/Age, systemic or genetic, environmental
