Perinatal Terms and Definitions Flashcards
Parity
The number of times a woman has given birth to a child (live or stillborn) after 20 weeks gestation (prior to 20 weeks, it is considered an abortion either spontaneous or therapeutic)
Presentation
Part of the fetus that enters pelvic inlet first. Cephalic (head), breech (buttocks or feet (footling), or shoulder
Presenting part
The part of the fetus that lies closest to the internal os. The part felt first by the examiner during VE. usually the occiput in a cephalic presentation or the sacrum in a breech presentation
Position
Relationship of the presenting part of the fetus (occiput, sacrum, mentum or siniciput) to the four quadrants of the maternal pelvis. Eg. Left occiput anterior (LOA)
Attitude
Relationship of the fetal body parts to each other; may be flexed, deflexed, or extended
Lie
Relationship of the long axis (spine) of the fetus to the long axis (spine) of the mother; lie may be longitudinal (vertical), horizontal (transverse) or oblique (diagonal)
Station
Relationship of the presenting part to an imaginary line drawn between the ischial spines of the pelvis. It is a measure of the degree of descent of the fetus through the pelvis
