Periglacial Landforms Flashcards
Name the EIGHT types of Periglacial Landforms
. Pingos . Ognip . Blockfields . Patterned Ground . Thermokarst . Teracettes . Solifluction Lobes . Ice wedges
Define Periglacial Environment
. Areas found on the edge of cold environments, such as polar and alpine environment
. The ground is permanently frozen (permafrost)
. Generally high - latitude (up North)areas, that are NOT permanently covered by ice and snow
Define Permafrost
. Refers to permanently frozen ground
. Temperatures below the ground remain below 0 degrees for more than two years
. Contain Active Layer
. If water is present in soil, the soil will freeze cementing minerals and organic particles together. Below this is the talik
. Contains Talik (unfrozen ground)
Define Active Layer
Top layer of the permafrost
. Frozen during colder winter months and thaws during hotter summer months
Define Talik
UNFROZEN ground found below the active layer and frozen ground in permafrost zone
Name three types of Permafrost
. Discontinuous permafrost
. Continuous permafrost
. Sporadic permafrost
Define Continuous permafrost
. Found in the coldest regions, where permafrost reaches deep in the soil
. Little melting of active layer
. All ground is frozen
Define Sporadic Permafrost
. Mean average temperature is just below 0 degrees
. Isolated small pockets of permanently frozen ground found below surface.
. Smaller patches and shorter length of permafrost than discontinuous permafrost
Explain Solifluction Lobes
- Refer to process of solifluction in test
1. ) The process of solifluction produces lobes.
2. )This is as one section of soil moving downhill moves faster than the soil around it.
3. ) This could be if one section of the soil on steeper ground, so it flows further. This produces a solifluction lobe that is the shape of a tongue
