Pericardial Disease Flashcards
1
Q
Definition of pericarditis
A
- inflammation of the pericardium
- may result in pericardial effusion +/- cardiac tamponade
2
Q
Causes of pericarditis (6)
A
- Infectious agents - viral, bacterial, tuberculosis
- Post-MI
- Post-operative pericarditis
- Malignant metastases
- Uremic pericarditis
- Immune-mediated pericarditis
3
Q
Types of acute pericarditis (5)
A
- Serous pericarditis
- non infectious inflammatory diseases eg uremic - Fibrinous pericarditis
- MI, rheumatic fever
- fibrin deposition, increased friction, rub on auscultation is more pronounced - Suppurative pericarditis
- infection - Hemorrhagic pericarditis
- direct spread or metastatic malignant neoplasm - Caseous pericarditis
- TB
4
Q
Types of chronic pericarditis (2)
A
- Adhesive pericarditis
- infectious, post cardiac surgery
- fibrosis, causing adhesions w neighbouring structures, affects heart fn - Constrictive pericarditis
- firm, fibrous hard pericardium w restrictive action of the heart
- instead of smooth single layered mesothelium
