pericardial disease Flashcards
myocarditis
inflammatory disease of the myocardium.
Inflammation with degeneration and necrosis of cardiac myocytes.
Conduction disruption is common.
most common cause of myocarditis
viruses.
Coxsackie viruses A & B
myocarditis can range from a _ disorder to a _ condition.
mild; lethal
pericarditis
the pericardium undergoes inflammation, fluid accumulates in the pericardial space.
pericardial effusion
the fluid that surrounds the heart.
this is an example of 3rd spacing.
cardiac tamponde
fluid accumulates to 200 mL or greater, it can compress the heart. The heart chambers are restricted by the surrounding pericardial fluid so they cannot stretch and fill with blood
Signs of Acute Pericarditis
chest pain
fever
dyspnea
pericardial friction rub
ECG: ST elevations
beck triad
Pulsus paradoxus
what does the chest pain for pericarditis feel like?
sharp and worsens with deep breathing
what does a Pericardial friction rub sound like?
scratching sound that can be heard through the stethoscope
what is Beck triad?
The Symptoms of cardiac tamponade is called Beck triad.
symptoms: Hypotension, Jugular vein distention, Muffled heart sounds.
Pulsus paradoxus
a decrease in systolic blood pressure of 10 mm Hg or more with inspiration
Pericarditis treatment
NSAIDs
ASA
Corticosteroids (+/-)
Colchicine: gout med, recently for pericarditis refractory to NSAIDs.
