Performance Improvement Flashcards
Performance Improvement is
Results-based, systematic process used to identify performance issues.
The performance improvement process is used to
Analyze root causes; select, design, and implement solutions to address issues; and measure the results with goal to continually improve performance.
Performance improvement is also referred to as
Human performance improvement (HPI)
Skills needed to be successful in this discipline are
Listening, Involvement, Innovation, Ability to tie solutions to organizational strategies, coaxing, and statistical analysis
To effectively consult on performance issues and solutions, professionals must understand
Performance Improvement Models
Explain the importance of understanding multiple performance improvement models.
There are various systematic approaches to performance improvement initiated by the client Wants-based, needs-based, and results-based, which the ASTD HPI model is.
Describe the ASTD HPI model
A business analysis to identify organizational goals, which is the driving force of the model followed by performance analysis, root cause analysis, solution selection, solution implementation, and evaluation of results.
Describe the steps of the performance improvement process and how they relate to each other.
- Business Analysis - driving force behind the HPI process to understand the organization strategy.
- Performance Analysis - clarifies the problem or gap (define performance content and gap analysis).
- Root Cause Analysis - identify factors contributing to the gap.
- Intervention Selection - root cause helps identify a solution.
- Intervention Implementation - manage the project solution.
- Evaluation of Results - critical element that provides data before implementing a performance improvement solution. Begins with the first step formative and summarize evaluations needed.
Evaluation may determine actual performance state, gap and cause analysis and other steps may need to be repeated.
Describe Rummler-Brache’s nine performance variables.
3 Levels of Performance: organization level, process level, and job/performance level.
3 Performance Needs: goals, design, and management.
Recall one alternate performance model.
Gilbert’s Behavior Engineering Model (1996) includes 6 major sets of factors that hinder or facilitate workplace performance.
3 Environmental/ outside the individual’ s control: information, resources, and incentives or consequences.
3 Individual controlled factors are: knowledge and skills, capacity, and motivation.
Performance improvement focuses more on
Outcomes than behaviors
What are outcomes?
Measurable results of activities, whereas behaviors are activities themselves.
What are the outcomes of performance improvement?
The attainment of organizational goals or results.
Factors that affect human performance
Knowledge Skill Desire Environment Opportunity
The ASTD HPI Model starts with what?
A business analysis to identify organizational goals, which is the driving force of the model followed by performance analysis, root cause analysis, solution selection, solution implementation, and evaluation of results.
