When is work done in an engine ?
When moving parts push against a resistance such as compression in the intake gasses
What is power?
The rate of doing work
What is energy ?
The capacity or ability to do work
What is calorific value ?
Total amount of energy that can be produced by the complete combustion of a fuel
What is IMEP?
Indicated mean effective pressure
An imaginary constant pressure
How do you find IMEP?
Pressure gauge attached to the engine under test and varying the pressure measured for one complete cycle
What is pumping loses?
Pushing out the exhaust gas
How is the indicated power found?
Data gathered from the engine dimensions, type, speed of engine
What is the break power?
The power output at the crankshaft of an engine , measured by a dynamometer
What is thermal efficiency?
A measure of the engines ability to convert heat from the fuel into mechanical energy
What is mechanical efficiency?
Engines ability to convert pressure in the cylinder to mechanical energy
