Percussion And Movement (shaping The Phrase) Flashcards
How does percussion relate to accenting? [OTL 1]
We’ll be using percussion to accent or lead to an accent.
Is the cymbal always a swell or crash? [OTL 1]
No, it can be a short accent as well. Like a tamborine
How can we think about timbre of percussion? [OTL 1]
Try to match it with the instrument we’re accenting if we want it to blend more.
This will prevent it from taking over.
E.g. low wood blocks with French Horn
What decorations can be used with accents? [OTL 1]
- Grace notes (single or multiple, above or below)
- trills
- Turns
- Runs
- Repeated notes
- Mordent
Do decorations have to be part of the line? [OTL 1]
No.
They can be in the middle ground or foreground. If behind the line, they can overlap with it.
For example, they can be a unison, or an overtone octave.
What’s a mordent? [OTL 1]
Adding a quick neighbour tone.
Can be upper or lower.
What’s a turn? [OTL 1]
A turn can goes a step up, then a step down, then a step down, then a step back to the original note.
Or vice versa, if it starts going down, it then takes two steps up, then a down.
