perceptual set Flashcards
What are the 5 types of expectations that are used to interpret stimuli
personal - Context, Motivation, Emotional State, Past Experience environment - Culture
Context
The setting or environment thin which perception is made.
Can largely speed up interpretation process, however, lead to inaccuracies
Past experience
Refers to the influence of personal experiences that have occurred throughout our lives, on our visual perception.
It is everything we learn through experience, both intentionally and unintentionally.
MOTIVATION
effected by our motives, for example, when we see what we want to see and not what is actually there.
Motivation is driven by interests, ambitions, desires, hunger or thirst.
emotional state
Different emotions can ‘set’ us to perceive information in a particular way which is consistent with the emotion being experienced.
culture
Culture includes such things as customs, beliefs, values, attitudes, food and music.
Culture can influence perception when stimuli does not fit in to their preconceived cultural symbols and individuals may find that stimulus difficult to process as a result.
