Perceptual Organization Flashcards
Who is the Gestalt Psychologist
He emphasized on the brain’s tendency to combine pieces of information into a meaningful whole
What is Figure Ground Pattern
This is the tendency to focus on a main object image and having everything else turn to the background
What is Grouping
This is the brains tendency to organize stimuli (things) into groups in order to process complex things
What are the methods of grouping
- Proximity
- Similarity
- Continuity
- Closure
- Area
- Symmetry
What is Depth Perception
This is the ability to perceive the world in 3d and judge the distance of objects
Binocular Cues
This is what requires you to use both eyes to perceive depth or distance
What is Retinal Disparity
This is the difference between visual images that each eye sees
What is Convergence
This is when our eyes move close to focus on an object that is close and further apart for an object that is in a distance
What are Monocular Cues
This is when you use one eye for depth perception
What is Linear Perspective
This is a depth cue that makes parallel lines converge to a vanishing point
What is Interposition (Overlap)
This is when a object overlaps another, the object is perceived further away
What is Relative Size
This is when two objects are the same but one appears smaller because it is further
What is Relative Height
The higher something is the further away it seems
What is Phi Phenomenon
This is a visual event where you think something is moving when it isn’t:; a loading screen
What is Relative Clarity
This is when objects that are further away looks hazy and objects that are closer looks sharp and clear
