Perception Flashcards
Law of good continuation
Lines tend to be seen as following the smoothest path
Law of good figure (simplicity)
Every stimulus pattern is seen so the resulting structure is as simple as possible
Law of similarity
Similar things appear grouped together
Law of proximity
Nearby objects appear grouped together
Law of closure
Separate elements will tend to be grouped together to form closed figures
Law of familiarity
Things are more likely to form groups if the groups appear familiar or meaningful.
What are the laws of perceptual organization?
Good continuation Familiarity Good figure (simplicity) Proximity Similarity Closure
What two types can regularities be?
Physical (I.e light, colour, form, etc)
Semantic ( I.e meaning, purpose, function)
Oblique effect
People perceive vertical and horizontals more easily than other orientations
Light from above assumption
Light casts shadows from above which provides information about depth and distance
Types of physical regularities
Oblique effect
Light from above assumption
Scene schema
Knowledge of what a given scene usually contains (I.e kitchen vs lawyer office)
Ebbinghaus Illusion
A circle surrounded by small circles is perceive as bigger than a circle surrounded by big circles.
- Perceptually different
- Physically identical
Ebbinghaus Illusion “Reverse”
Perceptually identical
Physically different
How did Aglioti test Ebbinghaus’ illusion?
Had people reach for the circle in the middle in both cases
Results:
The what pathway perceived them as both identical, but the where pathway didn’t fall for the illusion and changed the hand grip to wider or smaller depending on the condition.
The central circles were perceived to be identical in size but the grasping action reflects the actual size.
