Perceptiom Flashcards
Perception
Something that people learn to do.
Learning to perceive
Influenced by needs, beliefs, and expectations.
Through the process of perception the brain…
Tries to make sense out of confusion stimuli
Gestaly psychologists
Identify brain patterns and uses it in constructive perception.
Simplicity
We see the simplest shapes possible
Similarity
When similas objects are mixed we organize them in groups
Proximity
When organizing similar objects we tend to group them in terms to proximity
Continuity
We tend to see continuous pattern even though the whole picture may not appear
Figure-Ground hearing
“Zoning out” when we can’t perceive background sounds to the actual sound
Perceptul Inference
Our brain fills in the gaps in what we sense. It is automatic so it depends on experience
Subliminal messaging
Auditory or visual messages that are under the absolute threshold
Depth perception
The ability to recognize distance and three-dimensionality. Starts at 6 months
Forced perspective
Optical illusions, making something farther away, closer, larger or smaller that it actually is.
monocular depth cues
What can be perceive with a single eye: relative height, Interposition, light and shadows, and texture-density gradient
Relative height
Objects that appear farther away from another object are on a higher plane of view.
Interposition or Overlapping
View objects closer when outline is interrupted by another object
Light and shadows
Yields information about an object’s shape and size
Texture-density gradient
The further away, less details we can identify
Illusions
Incorrect perceptions
Motion parallax
Further objects move less, closer moves more
Binocular depth cues
Cues from movement of both eyes.
Convergence
Your eyes turn inward to look at nearby objects
Retinal disparity
Each eye had a different positions meaning they capture different images, this is the difference
