How much of our brain is dedicated to processing visual information?
Nearly 1/3. Visual perception plays an important role in many aspects of our lives as it allows us to navigate our environment without colliding with objects.
What percentage of accidents were due to driving?
57% of accidents in the UK and USA were solely due to drive factors.
Why do so many accidents happen?
Driving can stretch the normal cognitive capacities to their limit, and when this limit is reached accidents will happen.
How do eyes capture visual information?
Our retina is covered in photoreceptors which take form of cones and rods.
What are codes responsible for?
Cones are responsible for encoding colour and are used during daylight.
What are rods responsible for?
Rods are sensitive to lower light levels and generally used at night. Rods are worse at encoding detail which is why it is difficult to see during the night.
What is the role of ganglion cells?
Most of the visual information is encoded by ganglion cells, which use a very clever algorithm to identify edges, and they are particularly sensitive to high contrasts.
So what can pedestrians make themselves more visible at night?
Wear high contrasting clothes.
