Learning about percentages and conversions between fractions, decimals and percentages.
What does a percentage mean?
A percentage is a number that represents a value per hundred. For example, 45% means 45 out of 100. So if there are 200 items, then 45% means 90 items.
Convert 50% to a fraction.
To convert a percentage to a fraction, we divide the percentage by 100 and simplify. 50% = 50/100 = 1/2.
Convert 3.5% to a fraction.
3.5/100 = 0.035 - use your calculator. Always divide by 100.
Convert 115% to a fraction.
Divide by 100. 115/100 = 1 15/100 or 1 3/20.
Change 0.95 to a percentage.
To change to a percentage, multiply by 100 and add the % sign. So 0.95 x 100 = 95%.
Change 1.13 to a percentage.
1.13 x 100 = 113% Yes, you can have percentages that are greater than 100%.
Change 0.005 to a percentage.
0.005 x 100 = 0.5%
Convert 110% to a decimal.
To convert a percentage to a decimal we divide by 100. So 110% = 110/100 = 1.1.
Convert 35.8% to a decimal.
Divide by 100. 35.8/100 = 0.358.
Convert 1.9% to a decimal.
Divide by 100. 1.9/100 = 0.019.
Find what percentage 6 is out of 20.
To find the percentage of a quantity, we divide the quantity by the total and then multiply by 100.
So 6/20 x 100 = 30%
Jimmy gets 3 pieces of an 8 piece Pizza. What percentage did he get?
quantity/total x 100.
So 3/8 X 100 = 35.5%
What percentage is 14 out of 25?
number / total x 100.
14/25x100 = 56%
What percentage out of 76 is 19?
Again, number / total x 100.
So 19 / 76 x 100 = 25%
Jacob pays 15% tax on his income. If he earns $320, how much tax did he pay?
To find an amount from a percentage, we convert the percentage to a decimal first and them multiply by the total amount.
15 / 100 x 320 = $48.00
A class of 40 students is made up of 25 boys and 15 girls. 40% of the boys play cricket and 60% of the girls play netball. What percentage of the class are boys and girls? How many boys play cricket and how many girls play netball?
Boys = 25/40 x 100 = 62.5%
Girls = 15/40 x 100 = 37.5%
Notice that they must add up to 100%.
Boys playing cricket = 40/100 x 25 = 10.
Girls playing netball = 60/100 x 15 = 9.
