Percentage Yield Flashcards
what are the four factors that make sure the percentage yield is always below 100%
1) Incomplete reactions
2) extraction
3) side reactions
4) waste
when can an incomplete reaction occur
1) the reaction is very slow and hasn’t been given enough time to happen
2) the reaction is reversible and some of the products have turned back into reactants
what is the issue with extraction
with extraction it might be difficult to fully separate the product from the reaction mixture
what is a side reaction
unexpected reactions may occur, this may mean that the intended product is not created
what is the issue with waste
some of the products may stick to the apparatus
what is the formula for percentage yield
percentage yield = real yield / theoretical ( x 100 )
what is the real yield
the real yield is the mass of a desired product obtained from a reaction
what is the theoretical yield
maximum mass of a product that could possibly be made from a reaction
what is the percentage yield
a comparison of the real and theoretical yield of a reaction
