Notes on trauma
Trauma is the leading cause of death in children
90% is blunt trauma for kids; very little penetrating
Mostly vehicular
Abdominal bleeds from solid organs is the highest cause of hypovolemia in children
Note.
Look for distended abdomen
Ped Anatomy: Spine
Vertebral fractures and spinal chord injuries are rare
Weak neck and heavy head mean high cervical injuries
Ped Anatomy: Chest
Ribs are more pliable, flail chest is less likely
Pulmonary contusion more likely. No outward signs.
Ped Anatomy: Abdomen
Leading cause of shock
Liver is most common injured organ
Ped Anatomy: Extremeties
Bones are more pliable and muscles undeveloped
Growth plate injuries are common
Look for point tenderness and lack of ROM
Ped Anatomy: Skin
Thinner and covers larger area
Heat loss/gain is quicker
Transport to burn center if
Partial or full thickness burns >10%
>20% of body surface area
Full thickness burns>5% of BSA
Burns of face, hands, feet , genitals or over joints
