A

Who was Charles Martel?

A

Charles worked with the pope to restore Christianity. Charles wanted to stop the spread of Islam in Europe so he defeated the Muslims in the battle of Tours. This stopped the spread of Islam in Europe and ensured Christianity.

Who was Charlemagne?

A

Charlemagne doubled the size of his kingdom (The Franks). His kingdom is modern day Germany, France, Northern Spain, & most of Italy. By the 800’s Charlemagne’s kingdom turned into a empire. For the first time since the fall of western Rome, most of Rome was ruled by one government. On Christmas the pope crowned Charlemagne The new Roman Empire. He died in 1814 and after he died his empire broke into three kingdoms.

Who was Duke Otto I

A

In 936 Duke Otto of Saxony was elected king of Germany. The Germanic military defeated the
Magyars and freed their pope which was under the control of the Romans. The pope crowned him ruler of Rame in 962. This territory became the Holy Roman Empire (which is modern day German and Northern Italy) .

A

Pope Gregory was inspired by a man named Patrick to spread Christianity. He asked monks to become missionaries. In 597 Pope Gregory sent 40 monks to Britain to spread Christianity.

Who was William the conqueror ?

A

William the conqueror defeated the Anglo-Saxons at the Battle of Hastings with his Norman knights. Once he conquered the Anglo-Saxons they resisted his rule. He seized the land from the nobles and divided it among his knights. He carried out the first census since roman times in the Doomsday book.

Who was King Henry II

A

King Henry II ruled from 1154 to 1189. King Henry II ruled most of England, Wales, & Ireland. He was a feudal lord in France and Scotland. He set up a royal court with lawyers and judges. Circuit judges travelled all around the kingdoms to hear cases spreading the kings law. The courts created a common law that was the same through the kingdom.

What is the Magna Carta (Not a person)

A

In 1215 the nobles met with King Jon to sign the Magna Carta, which is a document that limits the kings power. The king could only collect taxes if the Great Council agreed. The Magna Carta relied on the feudal idea where the king and vassals both have certain rights and duties.

A

He became king in the late 1200’s and he increased the authority in the council. The group of lords, church leaders, knights, and townspeople called the parliament. The parliament was split into to groups. The upper house and lower house.

A

A 17 year old peasant girl that convinced King Charles to let her fight in the army at the battle of Orléans. She was succesfull and led France to win. The English thought she was a witch so they captured her and burned her. She is a National her and a Catholic saint

Who were Isabella and Ferdinand?

A

Isabell and Ferdinand were the Prince and princess of Aragon and Castile and married in 1469. They United their kingdoms into Spain. They wanted everyone in their kingdom to be Christian so they made the Spanish Inquisition. The Spanish Inquisition tried and tortured thousands of people that did not believe in Christianity. They made the Jews and Muslims leave or convert to catholic.
