People and the biosphere Flashcards
What does Biosphere mean
The surface of the earth { Just below -3m and above30m} Occupied by living organisms
Name some biomes
Rainforest Biome
Desert Biome
Temperate deciduose biome
Taiga Biome
Tundra Biome
What does Abiotic and Biotic mean
Abiotic-Non-living components in an ecosystem
Biotic-Living components in an ecosystem
What is a biome
A large area characterised by certain types of plants and animals
What is an ecosystem
Living things in an given area interacting with each other and their non-living environments
Describe the location of biomes
Tropical Rainforest-Found along the equator
Desert biome-Found near the Tropics of cancer and the Tropics of Capricorn
Taiga biome-Found in Russia and Canada
What 2 factors determine a biome
Temperature and precipitation
What climatic Factors determine the characteristics of each biome
Temperature- Decay and growth happens slower in colder temps but its hot and humid at the equator so lots of vegetation
Altitude-The higher the altitude the lower the temperature which leads to less vegetation and decrease of animals and the thinning of soil
Geology-Permeable rocks absorb a lot of water however the soul underneath could get waterlogged However non-permeable rocks could lead to flooding and it does not allow growth
Who are indigenous people
Indigenous people are the descendants of the earliest known inhabitants of an area, especially one that has been colonized by now dominant group of settlers
What goods do commercial extract and indigenous
Commercial-Iron, Oil, Cattle Ranching, Mining,
Indigenous-Medicine, Fresh fruit, Herbs, Building materials
What is the nutrience cycle
Leaves and trees contain nutrients
Leaves fall to the ground {litter}
Leaves decompose and break down
The nutrients are the absorbed by the tree for growth
How does the biosphere regulate the water cycle
The biosphere regulates the water cycle through process like transpiration, evaporation, and precipitation
What is carbon sink
Natrual stores of carbon
Who was Malthus and Boserup
Malthus was pelimistic and belived war and illneses was from God as he was trying to stop the population
Boserup was omtimistic and thought as the human population grows we will find a solution
How is Carbon released into the atmosphere
Co2 is sequenced by trees as the trees are carbon sink however when deforistation occurs Co2 is released into the atmosphere
