agrochemicals
chemicals used in agriculture to destroy insects, fungi, bacteria, pests and weeds (such as pesticides, herbicides and fungicides) and to regulate plant growth (such as fertilisers).
appellation
a wine classification system based on geographical location
competitive advantage
the existence of various advantages (including natural resources, location and a skilled workforce) that give a producer (or country) a competitive advantage over rival suppliers (countries).
ecological sustainability
using, conserving and enhancing the earth’s natural resources so that ecological processes, on which all life depends, are maintained and the total quality of life, now and in the future, can be increased.
graft
the process of splicing varietal vine bud onto root stock of another type, usually one resistant to particular pests and diseases.
marketing
the set of techniques used to attract and persuade consumers
microclimate
the climate within a small, defined area (possibly different from the area directly surrounding this area) that can dramatically affect the character of the wine produced there.
New World wines
a term used to describe those wines from the New World countries (particularly Australia, Latin America and the United States) when contrasting with Europe’s Old World wines.
organic agriculture
a system of ecologically sustainable agriculture that relies on biological processes to maintain the fertility of the soil and the health of plants and animals rather than relying on synthetic chemicals and genetically modified plants.
price point
the price at which demand is relatively high
root stock
the root onto which a bud is grafted.
terrior
a French term used to describe the site-specific differences in wine that result from factors such as soil types, drainage, local microclimate and sun exposure.
vintage
the year in which the grapes for a given wine are harvested.
viticulture
the cultivation and harvesting of grapes especially for the use in the production of wine.
water budget
a budget of the incoming and outgoing water from a region, including rainfall, evaporation, runoff and infiltration.
