People Flashcards
Wisconsin hate crime
2012 - gunman kills six at Sikh temple. One of the attendants talked about ignorance: “just because the see the turban they think you’re taliban.” 30-35 people were inside during shooting, 100-150 were outside.
The HAter and the Hated, both touched by crime
Stroman shot people he believed were arabs in 2001, saying he was angry about September 11th. Killed two and blinded Mr. Bhuiyan, a former Air Force pilot from Bangledesh. Bhuiyan is trying to save Stroman from execution. “Forgiveness is not enough, he acted out of ignorance…hate the sin, not the sinner.” -B. Stroman claims to have learned a lot, thinks hate needs to stop, we need more forgiveness and understanding.
My airport story
Sriram - Indian american who left bag unattended in airport while he gets food, is reported while other unattended bags aren’t reported.
Siddharth Shah
Name is flagged for being similar to a terrorists, he booked his flight at short notice. They immediately apologize when they see he is a doctor, which says something about the way people are prejudiced. He writes about how fear is spread through social contagion, if we warned people how their brains would react to fear and educated them more, we could avoid islamopobia. “Terrorized nervous systems should not rule the day.”
Arshad Chowdhury
Has experienced trouble traveling, his roommate moved out when he told him he was Islamic, his motorbike was destroyed and police never did anything, the FBI put him on a no fly list. Filed a claim against Northwest airline about civil rights, after three years they decided his case involved sensitive information - he was denied a full hearing, even though he was removed from the no fly list. Unfortunate that Bin Laden has become the face of islam - that a militant minority has come to represent everyone - hopefully his death means that there won’t be an automatic association between terrorism and islam.
NYT article about the legal battle on the limits of civil liberties
Preventative detention is a HUGE departure from the constitution. It is unconstitutional to detain innocent people to prevent potential crimes. It is significant that people are detained for immigration/visa related things - as this is one of the only ways the government can legally try people in a closed hearing with no layers present. Talks about the expansion of the executive branch and the lack of judicial review, and the American citizens who have been declared enemy combatants. The public has a right to know. Article tells stories of individual to exemplify all of this.
barbara comstock
director of public affairs for the department of justice - gave statement that Inspector General was justified in treatment of 9/11 detainees because they were “aggressively protecting innocent americans.”
Mosaic argument
release of some names, but not all names, could be releasing strategically and not releasing all because then they could piece together argument.
