Functions
The different types of work that need to be done in business, for example, in production, finance and marketing
Human resources
The workers employed by a business
Identifying human resource needs
The act of thinking about the purposes of human resources and how many and what types of workers will be needed
Personnel plan
A plan detailing the employees a business needs- how many, whether they will be full or part time workers, the skills they should have and when they will work
Organisation structure
How people and departments are arranged within a business
Organisation chart
A diagram that shows how the workers are organised in a business and who is in charge of whom
Flexible working
The practice of people working partly at their place of work and partly elsewhere, perhaps at home or while mobile, and possibly at times that suit them
Full-time working
When a person works 35 hours or more per week
Part-time working
When a person works fewer than 35 hours per week
Self-employment
When people work in their own business, selling their work to buyers who may be consumers or other businesses
Temporary working
When a person only works for a short period of time for an employer, sometimes on a short-term contract or sometimes on a day-to-day basis
Working from home
When a person completes work for a business (or themselves if they are self-employed) in their home
Working while mobile
When people work while they are on the move, travelling or on holiday
Communication
The transmission of a message from a sender to a receiver through a means of communication
Verbal communication
Communicating by speaking- in meetings, by telephone, by video-conferencing or through a presentation
Written communication
Communication by written words- text, email and letters
Feedback
The response made by the person who received a communication which indicates whether they have understood the communication
Digital communication
The electronic exchange of information using ICT

When an organisation decides how many and what type of workers it should employ
Skills gap
When a business recruits skilled workers because it is short of them
External methods of recruitment
Includes websites, newspapers, social media and specialist magazines
Internal methods of recruitment
Includes notice boards, word of mouth, company website and emails to staff
Job description
A list of the main duties, tasks and responsibilities of a worker
Person specification
A list of the qualities, qualifications and knowledge that a person should have to do a particular job
