Daniel Burnham
Chicago architect renowned for the influential 1909 Plan for Chicago and famous for the quote “Make no little plans. They have no fire to stir men’s blood.” His work was part of the birth of the City Beautiful movement.
Clarence Stein
Designer of Sunnyside Homes, Queens, NY and Radburn, NJ in the 1920’s. Co-founded the Regional Plan Association of America (1923.) Wrote New Towns for America. Proponent of the Garden Cities movement.
Saul Alinsky
An advocate of community organizing. This activist published Reveille for Radicals in 1946, which encouraged those who are poor to become involved in American democracy.
Edward Bassett
Known as the “Father of Zoning”. Helped shape the Standard State Zoning Enabling Act (issued 1922, printed 1924) and wrote the first comprehensive zoning code for New York City in 1916.
Ian McHarg
Wrote Design with Nature, which focused on conservation design using an overlay technique that was later the basis of GIS.
