Penicillins Flashcards
antibiotics affecting the bacteria cell wall
How do Penicillins work
They destroy bacteria by destroying the bacteria cell wall
Narrow spectrum Penicillin
Penicillin G IM - giving by intramuscular injection , Penicillin V - given by” VOCA”- mouth ,
Penicillin G
“Benzathine” it is used for IM injection , narrow spectrum
Penicillin V
Used for oral route , narrow spectrum
Broad spectrum Penicillin
amoxicillin clavulanate
amoxicillin clavulanate is also known as …
“augmentin”
antistaphylococcal
“Nafcillin”
Ticarcillin clavulanate
for I V use. (Sodium). causes hypernatremia
How long should you observe for allergies, or anaphylaxis after the medication is administered
Observe for allergic reactions for 30 min following parenteral administration of Penicillin
What lab values are monitored with Penicillin and why
kidney function, I&O, potassium high doses of penillin G hyperkalemia and hypernatremia for IV ticarcillin , monitor cardiac status and electroylte status because of these 2 electrolytes
What does high doses of PCN G cause
hyperkalemia
What does IV PCN ticarcillin clavulanate cause
hypernatremia
What are the contraindications for PCN
a history of sever allergic reactions to PCN , cephalosporins, or imipenem, clients allergic to one PCN are at risk for cross sensitivity to cephalosporins
What IV solution should you avoid mixing with PCN
aminoglycosides do not mix in the same IV solution , penicillin will inactivate the aminogycosides
What should the nurse do before administering antibiotics
do a culture before giving antibiotics
