penicillins Flashcards
1
Q
how is benzylpenicillin administered
A
Benzylpenicillin is inactivated by gastric acid and absorption from the gastro-intestinal tract is low; therefore it must be given by injection.
2
Q
why is phenoxymethylpenicillin not used for serious infections
A
It should not be used for serious infections because absorption can be unpredictable and plasma concentrations variable
3
Q
what bacteria is flucloxacillin active against
A
effective in infections caused by penicillin-resistant staphylococci, which is the sole indication for its use.
4
Q
when should co amoxiclav be used
A
Co-amoxiclav should be reserved for infections likely, or known, to be caused by amoxicillin-resistant beta-lactamase-producing strains.
