What differences do women in prison face?
- 2/3 women have mental health issues compared to 2/5 men
- Substance misuse higher
- Self harm rates 5x higher: Men = 540 Women = 2465

Why are there differences between Women & Men going into prison?

- Prison is rarely necessary, appropriate & proportionate

- Majority of 80yr olds were 70+ when sentenced

What problems do the aging population face in prison?
- 59% of older prisoners have illnesses or disabilities and face delays in accessing healthcare
- Resettlement: little planning for release
- Prison environment: institutional thoughtlessness
