Quadriceps Femoris Group Action
All: Extend the Knee (tibiofemoral joint)
Rectus Femoris: Flex the hip (coxal joint)
Quadriceps Femoris Group Origin Rectus Femoris
Anterior Inferior Iliac spine (AIIS)
Quadriceps Femoris Group Origin Vastus Medialis
Medial lip and linea aspera
Quadriceps Femoris Group Origin Vastus Intermedius
Anterior and lateral shaft of the femur
Quadriceps Femoris Group Insertion
Tibial tuberosity (via the patella and patella ligament)
Quadriceps Femoris Group Innervation
Femoral L2,3,4
Biceps Femoris Action
Flex the knee, laterally rotate the flexed knee(T/F joint) , long head: Extend the hip (coxal joint)
Biceps Femoris Origin
Long head: Ischial tuberosity
Short head: Lateral lip of linea aspera
Biceps Femoris Insertion
Head of the fibula
Biceps Femoris Innervation
Long head: Sciatic (tibial branch) L5, S1,2,3
Short head: Sciatic (peroneal branch) L5,S1, 2
Semitendinosus Action
Flex the knee (tibiofemoral joint) , Medially rotate the flexed knee (T/F joint), Extend the hip (coxal joint), Tilt the pelvis posteriorly
Semitendinosus Origin
Ischial tuberosity
Semitendinosus Insertion
Proximal, medial shaft of the tibia at pes anserinus tendon
Semitendinosus Innervation
Sciatic (tibial branch) L4, 5, S1, 2
Semimembranosus Action
Flex the knee (tibiofemoral joint), Medially rotate the flexed knee (T/F joint), Extend the hip (coxal joint), Tilt the pelvis posteriorly
Semimembranosus Origin
Ischial tuberosity
Semimembranosus Insertion
Posterior aspect of medial condyle of tibia
Semimembranosus Innervation
Sciatic (tibial branch) L4, 5, S1, 2
Gluteus Maximus Action
All fiber: Extend the hip (coxal joint), Laterally rotate the hip (coxal joint), Abduct the hip (coxal joint)
Gluteus Maximus Origin
Coccyx, edge of sacrym, posterior iliac crest, sacrotuberous, and sacroiliac ligaments
Gluteus Maximus Insertion
Iliotibial tract (upper fibers) and gluteal tuberosity (lower fibers)
Gluteus Maximus Innervation
Inferior gluteal L5, S1, 2
Gluteus Medius Action
All fibers: Abduct the hip (coxal joint)
Anterior fibers: Flex the hip (coxal joint), Medially rotates the hip
Posterior fibers: Extend the hip (coxal joint), Laterally rotate the hip (coxal joint)
Gluteus Medius Origin
Gluteal surface of ilium, between posterior and anterior gluteal lines, just below the iliac crest
