Pelvis Flashcards
What is the purpose of the Anterior Innominate Test?
Check for unilateral forward displacement of the sacrum or ilium
Check for SI joint sprain
What is the procedure for Anterior Innominate Test?
Patient places unaffected foot 2-3 feet forward, then flexes at the waist as far as they can go. If rear foot remains flat, take a further step and try again.
We are trying to torque the pelvis to its maximum. Once the rear foot lifts off the ground, we have reached maximum torque.
What are positive findings for Anterior Innominate Test?
Localized pain over SI joint
What is the procedure for the Belt Test?
Patient bends forward to touch their toes - note pain. Doctor then braces patient’s hips with hands and places their own hip snugly against patient’s sacrum and then tells patient to bend forward again - note pain.
What is the purpose/positive findings of the Belt Test?
To assess pain in hip and lumbar flexion.
Pain during 1st part of test but not in 2nd part: SI joint problem
Pain during 1st and 2nd part of test (at same or lesser degree of flexion): Lumbar problem
What is the purpose and findings of Erichsen’s Test?
To elicit SI Joint pain by stressing the anterior SI joint ligaments
What is the procedure for Erichsen’s Test?
Patient lies prone, Doctor compresses SI joints laterally and with pressure over PSIS (using thenars/thumbs). This is creating a “double IN” Ilium.
What is the purpose of Gaenslen’s Test?
Looking for SI joint sprain or instability
What is the procedure for Gaenslen’s Test?
Patient lies supine while doctor stands on side being tested and brings unaffected knee up towards patient’s chest. Doctor then slowly hyper-extends the affected leg.
What are positive findings for Gaenslen’s Test?
SI joint pain on side being tested
Radiating pain to thigh/groin
What is the procedure for Goldthwait’s Sign?
Patient lies prone while doctor palpates L5 and S1. Doctor uses other hand to elevate affected leg.
What is the purpose of Goldthwait’s Sign?
Pain before L5-S1 separation = SI joint problem
Pain after L5-S1 separation = Lumbar problem
T/F: The SI joint has a sciatic distribution of pain.
False!!
What is the procedure for Hibb’s Test?
Patient is prone. Doctor flexes the knee to 90 degrees and internally rotates femur by pushing foot laterally.
What is the purpose of Hibb’s Test?
Looking for SI lesion
