What is the pubic symphysis?
secondary cartilaginous joint formed by the union of the bodies of the pubic bones in the median plane
Where does the head of the femur articulate?
the acetabulum (vinegar cup)
What is the large foramen called on the hip bone?
the obturator foramen
Where is the greater pelvis (false pelvis) located?
superior to the pelvic inlet
How can the female pelvis be identified?
thin and light, lesser pelvis is wide and shallow, wide greater sciatic notch, comparatively large
How can the male pelvis be identified?
thick and heavy, more prominent markings, pelvic inlet is heart shaped, large acetabulum
What joins the apex of the sacrum to the base of the coccyx?
fibrocartilage and ligaments
What causes the pelvic joints and ligaments to relax during pregnancy?
increase in levels of sex hormones and the presence of the hormone relaxin
Where is the pubic arch?
conjoined inferior rami of the pubis and ischium
How do pelvic fractures occur?
direct trauma to the pelvic bones, automobile accident or forces transmitted to the bones from the lower limb
