Pelvic Girdle Flashcards
What are the three bones that form the pelvic girdle?
Right and left hip bones, sacrum
Describe the hip bones and how they were developed
Large, irregularly shaped bones. Developed from the fusion of the ilium, ischium and pubis
How was the sacrum formed?
From the fusion of five sacral vertebrae that were originally separate
What is the acetabulum?
The cup-like depression in the lateral surface if the hipbone that articulates with the head of the femur. It is where the ilium, ischium and pubis were fused
Where are the right and left hip bones joined?
They are joined anteriorly at the pubic symphysis, a secondary cartilaginous joint
How do the hip bones join with the sacrum?
They articulate posteriorly with the sacrum at the sacro-iliac joints
What is the ilium?
The superior, fan-shaped part of the hip bone
Which part of the ilium participates in the formation of the acetabulum?
The body, on its external aspect
What forms the iliac fossa?
The anteromedial concave surface of the ala
What are the two parts of the ischium?
The body and the ramus
What is the ischial tuberosity?
The large postero-inferior protuberance of the ischium
What is the ischial spine?
The small, pointed posteromedial projection near the junction of the ramus and the body
What is the lesser sciatic notch?
The concavity between the ischial spine and the ischial tuberosity
What is the greater sciatic notch?
The larger concavity superior to the ischial spine, formed partly by the ilium
What is the pubis?
An angulated bone with a superior ramus and an inferior ramus
